Thumb Industries held it’s sixth annual camel race fundraising event Saturday, March 4, 2017. The event was sold-out and raised money for the agency and the clients served. The event was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bad Axe and was attended by approximately 400 participants. The evening included a great meal, a vast number of door prizes, 50/50 raffles, snacks and 10 heats of camel racing. The event was a crowd pleaser with lots of gambling fun and excitement.
Many businesses and individuals, alike, participated by attending the event and/or sponsoring one of the fifty four wooden camels that raced that evening. Everyone who attended had a great time! Camel sponsors were extremely creative when ’dressing’ their camel. There were camels in tractors, trucks and dressed as super heroes and the Easter Bunny. The camels raced in 10 heats of six down a track with the help of celebrity rollers and oversized fuzzy dice. The camels advanced one space at a time each time their number came up on the tossed dice. Individuals were able to bet on each heat using camel bucks. The event was extremely successful and a one-of-a-kind event for the area.
Trophies were awarded to Mary Roberts for the best dressed camel and to WLEW for the fastest camel. An additional prize for the best-dressed derby attire was also awarded to Mr. & Mrs. Karl Hass.
